Format media with Windows
From The Neuros Technology Wiki
[edit] Introduction
Formatting flash drives from time to time is a good idea. With use the memory can become defragmented and as a result performance drops. If you find that recently your recordings from the OSD suffer from framedrops or loose a/v sync, formatting may help.
The OSD can read & write to the following filesystems: FAT16, FAT32, ext2 & ext3. NTFS support does exist in recent firmware, but is slow & resource intensive, and I don't recommend it.
Below I'll quickly go into how one formats their SD, CF or USB memory stick (henceforth known as 'media') in Windows.
Note: If you have a large External Hard Drive, you'll see that peculiarly Windows will not allow you to format it as FAT32. The solution to this is in the following document supplied by Neuros: HowToReformatExtHDtoFAT32.pdf
[edit] Method
- Insert the media you wish to format into your PC or adapter.
- Open 'My Computer' and locate your media's icon.
- Right-click on your media & select 'Format'
- In the 'File System' dropdown, select 'FAT32'
- Supply a 'Volume label' of your choice.
- Click 'Start', pause, and once you're sure, click OK in the confirmation dialog.
[edit] Warning!
Formatting your drive is too easy to do, and nigh on impossible to undo. Always check to make sure you are formatting the correct device!
