[edit] Mic record to hard drive
Surely there must be a market in the under-$2000 range for a portable stereo recorder with mic power on a 1/8th-inch connector!
[edit] Apple peripheral interface
What's the story on why NONE of the portable audio/video vendors are willing to put a compatible connector on their devices, so they could plug in the bezillion accessories available for the iPod? I can't believe that Apple has a valid patent on a *($%*#$*# connector or a pinout! Or that if in the perversion of the US patent system they did, you couldn't get around it with a compatible connector that didn't violate the patent.
[edit] Network interface
How about a native network interface? Bluetooth or wireless USB for instance would be really nice: bluetooth would let us use bluetooth headsets to listen! Also would allow (slow) wireless sync with a computer. And N3-to-N3 music sharing. Lots of cars are going to become bluetooth enabled for cellphones - why let them have all the fun? Or even 802.11... show up and share your music, portable jukebox style.
[edit] Storage interface
I suggest just enough flash on the board to hold uboot, which would then boot from either microSD(up to 4GB now!) or SD(max of 8GB now!). Stick with the backpack but change the connector to a hard-mounted miniUSB (male on the backpack, female USB HOST on the controller - normally with a rubber plug or cover). Backpacks can come in flavors: hard drive version (with integral battery pack), 'cardreader' version, which allows for CF (max of 16GB now!) or SD, or even multiples of those (it's USB, remember?). All of this guarantees that our hardware stays relevant no matter how much denser storage gets - no new 1/2/4/8/10/20/30/40/60gb versions for us! No need to rebuy everything just to take advantage of larger, cheaper storage.
