regarding srobertson's suggestions on the forums, I have a few thoughts.

  1. I think beta should just be an archival "process" in other words, we are now in beta with the OSD, let's make comments and forums public, but when we exit beta and move to production, let's just copy those posts into a "beta" folder within that area, that is especially "noted, designated" etc that say's "please note these posts were made while hte product was in beta, most issues noted here have likely been fixed already..."
  2. mailing lists should be somehow integrated with the other stuff, it just doesn't make sense to have them separate to me.
  3. Joe's forum should be in "chatter" or some kind of general area, it's not just for developers (although that's where a lot of my attention has been turned lately)
  4. special offers will just be a static webpage, no forum needed there.
  5. I'm not married to the HW, Software split, but I'd encourage you to take a look at the current forums, there's a lot of "the remote stinks" or whatever, that doesn't really quite fit in the categories you list, and I'm not sure that tips and tricks and hacks and mods and support will always be distinct either. Finally one important consideration is to structure it that will be efficient for the "super-users" who respond to a lot of posts, etc. I'm not sure what that means, just something to think about JoeBorn

regarding the regards regarding my regards to your regards:

  1. It's possible to do that exactly as you describe, but it will most likely involve coding a custom module for whatever forum we choose. I need to learn PHP anyway.
  2. I'm really unsure of the mechanics for the mailing-list integration. I'll try a couple things and flesh out more detailed ideas for implementing this, hopefully fill in Website_Reorganization:Lists_to_Forums with what I find out.
  3. Not only is the whole thing your call, this one in particular is doubly so. Sounds great.
  4. Okay, cool, although the forums will have good access control built in where other places might not.
  5. I will definitely spend a lot of time poking around on the existing forums before I offer my next "bold suggestion." That's something I've been remiss in doing, and it probably should have been the first place I looked. I do stand by splitting off "support" from "general", though.

I will ponder pretty much as hard as I can, and see what creative things come out of it. Srobertson 00:57, 5 Jul 2006 (CDT)
