VDrive: Usage

[edit] Usage
There are two primary reasons you'd buy this device:
1. You have a lot of data that you carry around or need portable/external for one reason or another and its nice to be able to view the media without a PC. In other words, you needed an external HDD and this has additional functionality.
2. You travel a lot and want to watch video on TVs away from home (hotel rooms, etc). What else are you going to do? Lug around a DVD player? You could connect a laptop and bring DVDs, but it's kind of a pain.

[edit] Impressing the inlaws by JoeBorn
Ok, what the heck, I'm one of the blessed few to have one of these, so I'll tell a story myself. I was at the inlaws and had all the family photos and videos of when we adopted Lily on the vDrive (since I back up my files to it). I plugged it in the TV and showed the videos and browsed through photos etc. They were impressed. It was pretty cool.

[edit] First test of USB OTG by Kronin
So I'm on vacation, and I take some pictures and video clips using my camera (a Canon Powershot A80) one night. "Let's see how this USB OTG function works (and see if the vDrive can play the video clips)!" Plug the vDrive into the power adaptor, plug the camera into the vDrive, and push the only button on the front of the unit. Nice feedback with the LEDs in the front, letting me know that it's transferring, then changing color again to let me know it's done. Now hook up the TV connection and, lo and behold, the vid clips play wonderfully!!
My wife and parents just watch and say "Cool! you took video clips last night!" It's awesome when the technology, and complexity of it, is ignored because it just works.

[edit] Playing VCDs for Lily
I have VCDs from China for teaching my daughter Chinese. Now our DVD player won't play them, and I can sit on the computer and try to figure out what software will convert them so that I can burn them to DVD or I can just copy them to the vDrive and play them. Not only is it easy but they won't get wrecked from handling or lost from not getting put away.
