[edit] Bugs
[edit] Enhancements
Audio-in level meter software - for audio engineers everywhere! Ideally this would be a spectrum analyser aswell but hey, one step at a time ;o)
An Open-Source saved GPS path system - The ability to take saved direction from something like Google Earth and save them to the 442 and play them back would be amazing, purhaps through the 442's ability to lauch Linux applications a program like this won't be to far out of the possibilities
FLAC File support - Obviously the best format in terms of quality shouldn't be left out of the 442. FLAC files have to be converted down to MP3 LAME (192kbs) to get them on the 442. Native Playback and Recording support are a must.
Ship unit with demo sound and video files - just to give the buyer a warm fuzzy that the unit does work before they tackle recording on their own. Could just be short commercial for Neuros, anything
Ability to Modify the GUI - ability to upload new themes/templates that modify the GUI. Could be as simple as a skin applied to all screens.
CompactFlash+ instead of SD- With a CF reader, all users will be able to use the flash media of their choice (with available adapters) and CF+ (CF Type 2) allows the expansion of MicroDrives. CF is used on high-end cameras, offers generally larger sizes and cheaper price.
USB 2.0 Host - as a "Digital Media Computer", connect any usb-mass-storage (multi-card reader) device to the 442 for file transfer. Ultimate media transfer holy grail found in Archos mv500 competitionBug 377. This could also include connections for things like bluetooth headphones and microphones. We'd need drivers for that of course :-(
Port Neuros OS2 GUI - Not all of it, but frankly the current MP3 player on beta sucks.
Ogg Vorbis playback and recording - We comissioned the original Ogg decoder for the TI, we'll certainly look like buffoons if we can't get Ogg on this baby fastBug #404.
Quicktime playback - Great for playing all those movie trailers
Basic video editing on the device - cutting and pasting and nuking commercials right on the device Bug #416.
Other Recording mediums besides ASF - ASF is not compatible with a lot of the open source tools on the market, given Microsoft's inability to play well with others. XVID, DIVX and OGG video would be fantastic! Bug #422
Change the size of the "Press Play to Record" Banner on PVR Mode - This is very large and right in the middle of the screen... It would make life easier to start the Tivo if we could see the TV screen. On the bottom of the screen would be the best placement.
Dual Screen Viewing Abilities - Ability to view the picture on the 442 AND on TV at the same time when plugged into your system for recording. We can do it with Laptops, I hope it can be done with the 442
Pause a Recording - This would help greatly if you could edit while you record... then if you were watching while you recorded you could pause the recording during commercials. Bug #438
FM Transmitter - Add an FM transmitter like the Neuros II had. It'd make the 442 the complete portable media solution.
More Image Formats - TIFF, PNG, Camera Raw images
Image Zoom and Pan - Would be great to have.
WiFi and Browser - Either built-in WiFi, or support for external WiFi USB dongels and then a compact build of Mozilla. (SDIO or compactflash could support an SD-Wifi card.)
E-Book Viewer - This device could also work well for reading E-Books, PDF's, txt files, etc.
MS Playfor Sure Compatibility - Great if this device worked with all the subscription based music services (Rhapsody, Yahoo, etc)
Standard WMV support - Standard - Pre version 9 - WMV support would be a great addition to make it easier to play all the short video clips that are the most commonly emailed format.
Audible support - Support for Audible.com audiobooks would be a great feature.
Standard 3-way RCA connectors for Output - Will allow you to play videos/photos on your friend's TV without having to carry the special cable around.
Bookmark/resume - Allow the setting of bookmarks in video/audio files. Multiple bookmarks would be best, but at least allow the unit to resume the last movie played. Right now, watching a two hour movie, you have to watch it from start to finish, without shutting down, unless you want to fast-forward to get back to where you were.
Remote control - add a remote control (infrared or whatever) to allow controlling audio/video
Docking Station would be great. it could also have a TV jack, so that it will act as an portabe tv on the go, that would be cool
Bigger Hard Drive Perhaps 60, I'm seeing PVP's with 100 GB, so we have to kick it up :)
Alarm Clock - allow music and/or videos to start playing automatically at a given time, with a snooze control, and allow a sleep timer to turn off music/videos after a preset delay
Auto-Play - have an "auto-run" folder so that files dropped there will be automatically played when the device is disconnected, and they get deleted or moved to a "played" folder after playing once
Calendar - displays one month and the current time in big letters over optional background while playing optional music
Contact List - add a contact list that can be easily browsed for looking up addresses and phone numbers
Disk Defragmenter - ability to defrag the hard drive natively
Dual Use - instead of locking the controls when connected as a storage device, allow content to play even as the computer is accessing it
Encryption - the 442 makes a nice backup device, which can be synchronized with software such as FileSync, but it would be nice if it could be put into an encryption mode that automatically encrypts all the files sent to it and decrypts them when retrieved. Also, make it so that the PVP has the ability to act as an external Hard Drive.
Hidden Files/Folders - sometimes you have photos or movies you don't want others to stumble upon (you know who you are), so it would be nice to be able to hide those
MIDI Player - add a midi player
Modeless Launching - ability to launch any file (audio/video/photo) and have it played in the right mode
Mono Recording - when recording from a mono device, allow one audio input to be selected as the sole audio stream so the sound doesn't play back from just one channel
Owner Information - a screen that comes up at power-on with the owner's contact info in case it's lost
Profiles - ability to save preferences in profiles, so it will act differently at work than it does at home
Randomize - option to play items in random order (audio/photo/video)
ScanDisk - a native HD integrity check and repair tool
Screen Savers - visualizations that can accompany music, or simply be standalone eye candy
Script Interpreter - add a script interpreter to allow the device to be easily programmed (do this first and do it right and the 442 will explode with new features and enhancements)
Slideshow Controls - allow the time between slides to be set
Speech Synthesizer - add speech synthesis for reading text files and announcing the time
Thumbnails - ability to browse by thumbnails
Timed Recording - allow a schedule to control the start and duration of recordings
Time-lapse & Frame-rate controls - Allow user to set frame-record rate. There are currently very few (maybe no) players on the market that allow this. This feature would make the Neuros a "must-have" for anyone doing surveilance work (huge market) as well as people like myself who specialize in timelapse video. Being able to record the images as a jpg-stream (rather than mpeg4 video) would make it even more useful. These are easy features to add because they are totally software based.
Use Sub-Folders - allow content in sub-folders to be played as well when the option is selected
Widgets - scriptable widgets/gadgets
Zoom and Pan - allow photos to be zoomed and panned
Voice Recorder - It would be a good feature.
.SWF Viewer - in case you want to watch those funny flash movies on the go, also, you might have to configure the device for this, sinch different files might require to use keyboard, and mouse if it were on a computer, and this PVP dont have those things, so you would have to set it up, fil it requires that feature.
Touch Screen If you have the DS, then you know how fun it is to use a touch screen, and it would be a neat feature. This could also fix the problem of the "hard to use control pad."
Digital Camara it would be handy, and it would be cool for it to be able to take still images, and video.
Interactive Video - we could make some cool games if we could write a script so that, when a video reached a certain frame, the video would pause so the script could continue the video at a specific frame determined by which button was clicked
Subtitle Support Some movies, are in different languages, and if the subtitle isnt already with in the video, then I suggest that this PVP, support .sub/.srt files, so that the video file and subtitle file (.sub/.srt) will work together. It would be a great feature.
Audio Edit Not really edit, but have features like play audio in slow motion, fast motion, reverse playback, stuff like that.
Colors Have the PVP come in a variety of colors, and/or skins for it.
Sleek Design Make the design of it, take people breathe away.
Battery Charge through USB One less Charger to carry for the Road Warriors
Higher Resolution Screen ~~ A 640x480, would be nice with more colors for us that can tell the difference.**** YES!
More audio playing options shuffleplay, (m3u) playlists, playing by artist, genre, year.
Scrolling Title & Artist names now long artist & title names are cut off.
Faster Scrolling Make the scrolling faster
Multiple views Allow to change views beside from having a verticle view for browsing. Also make it where you can listen to music, and browse at the same time. Currently when you move to a file while another one is playing it starts playing that one.
USB Hub I think this will be an excellent feature for the new 442, I dont know if this is the same as the "USB 2.0 Host" feature as requested above. By adding a USB Hub, you would allow it to exchange files between other 442 devices, and other mp3 players. A USB hub on the 442 would make attatchable acessories (as mentioned above) possible. A digital cam could use it, a mini keyboard for web browsing (if the new version includes it) could use it, and many other possibilities. Of course Neuros would have to manufacture these products, so that it will work with the 442. I think this would be a great feature for the hardware department.
Folders When you go to Video player, it would be nice it if took you to a folder with something like "My Videos" and then have sub folders. Inlike now, where you go to Audio player, or Video player it takes you to the main folder directory, and then you would have to go to the audio or video folder of your choice.
Photos Ability to view RAW formats (to compete with the Epson p-2000) and put in hands of traveling photographers
.MKV Video Support It would be a great feature if it had that.
Built In Speakers I can't believe the first version didnt have this.
Video Frame Capture ( Save a Picture ) It would be an easy way to to have digital camera caplitites when an external video camera is connected to the video in port.
Now Playing ScreenIt would just be a nice feature. ID3v2 Support with a visualization for all the boredom
.m3u playlist support Rather than go through all the files one by one to play, m3u support would make listening to certain music all the easier
Foreign Language Support Right now, only the Roman alphabet and some accents are supported, and if your file is named with any kind of foreign characters (ie Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc) the file will not play. It'd be nice to be able to just leave the files as they are, and have titles/artist names/album names with foreign text display properly.
Customizable Display While not something that is needed, it would be nice to be able to personalize your player a bit with wallpapers or themes or something of the like.
DLNA Compliant Neuros should try to make the OSD DLNA compliant and sign up as a member. This would greatly enhance what the OSD can connect to later on as other devices go this way.
